Driving License
​
There are four kinds of Driving License and one Driving Permit, they are
a) Learner's Driving License
b) Probationary Driving License
c) Full Hong Kong Driving License
d) Temporary Driving License
e) Hong Kong International Driving Permit

Purpose of different types of license and permit
​
a) Learner's Driving License
This license is a must as per Transport Department for any driving class. That is is one going to attend any driving class, must in advance apply this license if they don't have one. Application of the Learner's Driving License at least one have successfully applied the Written Test Appointment.
This license valid for a year from the issue date and is not renewable. If one applied a new Learner's Driving License before the current one expired, the License will then be expired same date the new Learner's Driving License issued.

b) Probationary Driving License
If one successfully pass the road test, the applicant could apply the Probationary Driving License with the presentation of the original copy or duplicate copy of the Certificate of test result (result slip or commonly known as the yellow sheet) . The Probationary Driving License normally will expire in a year from the date issued. However, if there were five or more offensive point accumulated, then it will be automatically extended for 6 more months. To check on the offensive points record, one could visit the Traffic Conviction Record Office at 11 Arsenal Street to apply a Certificate of Traffic Conviction Record.

c) Full Hong Kong Driving License
By the name Full License, it is the final license issued by Transport Department. It last for 10 years and need to be renew no over three years after expiration. This license could be applied by holders of Probationary Driving License is expired and within two years after expiration. Also could be applied by holders of Temporary Driving License that have one take pass the driving test. This license also be applied through Direct Issue to any qualified applicant.

d) Temporary Driving License
This is the license granted to the applicant by Transport Department. It valid for a year from the date of issue. However, it subject to if any driving test is failed then the license will be immediately revoked by Transport Department. During the validity of the license, the applicant can driving in Hong Kong alone and not for any others.

e) Hong Kong International Driving Permit
​
Applicant must be holder of Full Hong Kong Driving License. It is for applicants to driving at the Country or Place listed on the permit but not include Hong Kong. Thus if one that the Full Hong Kong Driving License or the Probationary Driving License was suspended, cannot use this permit to drive in Hong Kong. This permit last one year from the date it issued and not renewable.

f) Duplicate copy of the Driving License
​
Applicant could apply duplicate copy of their driving license. However, as recommend by Transport Department, if it is the Full Hong Kong Driving License and will be expired in about 4 months, then probably apply for the renewal is more appropriate.

Requirement on Application
Document Needed include:
a) Identification of applicant
It could be Hong Kong Identification Card or Passport the applicant holding.
b) Address proof of the applicant

It could be the less than three months old Direct Address Proof of the applicant
It could be the applicant's own bank/ insurance statement or bill from utility companies such as mobile phone, gas, water, rate, electricity etc
​
If the applicant does not have his or her own address proof, then following documents are needed:
1) the current valid 4 pages employment contract, and
2) Less than three months old (from issue date and relevant to current date is not exceed the three months period) Direct Address Proof of the employer is needed.
​
It could be a bill from the utility companies such as water, gas, rate, electricity, telephone or a bank/ insurance statement etc.
​
Note: Address proof is not needed if it is applying for license duplication.

e) Hong Kong International Driving Permit $400

Settlement of the corresponding payment
